Getting to Know Matt Payes

What is your favorite thing about being a real estate agent?

My favorite thing about being a realtor is helping my clients uncover what they actually want in a home…it’s usually not the same as their initial vision.

What characteristic(s) makes you a great agent?

I think I’m a really good listener, and problem solver.

What is your favorite thing to do in Richmond?

The Richmond Folk Festival. It combines live music, great food, and local beers.

What are you typically doing when you aren’t working?

Spending time with my wife, daughter, two dogs, and friends (pre-pandemic).

How long have you been a Realtor?

Since March 2017.

What made you want to become a real estate agent?

I really wanted to find something where I could both feel like I was helping people and have the freedom to run my own business.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to buy/sell a home?

Have patience. There are going to be bumps along the way, but we’ll get there.

Which part of the buying/selling process excites you the most, why?

When we come to a final agreement on the terms of the contract. I’m a firm believer in finding a solution where both sides see a positive outcome.

What is the first thing that catches your eye when you walk into a home?

How much natural light the home gets, it’s important to have that in at least one living area.

What is something your clients can expect when they work with you?

My attention. I pride myself on putting my clients first and being upfront and honest.

What did you do before you became a Realtor?

I worked in Market and Consumer research in the pharmaceutical, packaging, and CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) industries.

How has the pandemic changed the way you work with clients?

I always preferred in-person meetings and conversations, but I’ve adapted to being virtual whenever possible, including showing homes.
